Ubuntu 8.10 on Acer 4520 : 2 Easy Steps
To be honnest I’ve skipped 08.04 because of one simple reason : I’m to lazy to do all the upgrade routine! Usualy ubuntu installation is easy (especially with intel chipsets) but in my case ( I own an Acer 4520 with Atheros WIFI and Nvidia GeForce 7000m) ubuntu installation can realy turn into frustation!
Today I have time to waste and I decided to try the new ubuntu 08.10, downloaded the iso from my campus repository, the download took 20 minutes and burned it to a CD, restarted my laptop and boot up the new OS. The ubuntu desktop shows up at a 800×600 resolution and the WIFI wasnot up. I was not really happy with the initial impression, but i installed it anyway.
less than 30 minutes later a fresh ubuntu 08.10 is running on my laptop, and my first task is to make the WIFI work, my atheros works with the Alpha release of Ubuntu 08.10 (i’ve tried it form the live cd) but the new driver package that is included with final relase is somehow not compatible with the atheros on my laptop. So to make it work i must install backports :
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic
Open the Hardware Drivers application ( System >> Administration >> Hardware Drivers ), disabled the “Support For Atheros 802.11 Wireless LAN Cards” and activated the “Nvidia accelerated Graphics Driver (version 177)” then click apply, the application downloads the nvidia driver and installs it, reboot the laptop.
I was Amazed! After the reboot everything was working fine! the screen resolution was auto readjusted to 1280×800 and the wifi is up and running! And all that i’ve done is just to simple steps : install the backports and activated/deactivited the drivers.
I Must admit Ubuntu is getting better all the time!
Gobuntu & FreeSoftwareLaptop
Ada 2 hal baru yang sangat menarik perhatian saya ketika mengunjungi blog beliau sore ini, yang pertama adalah Gobuntu dan FreeSoftwareLaptop ;
Update: a number of comments have asked what Gobuntu is. It is a flavour of Ubuntu (like Kubuntu or Xubuntu) that is basically the same desktop environment as Ubuntu (a GNOME desktop) and a very strict set of restrictions on the licences of code and content. This means that we try to strip out ANYTHING which is not modifiable and redistributable, including firmware, PDF’s, video footage, sounds etc. We are trying to apply the FSF “rights” definition to everything in the platform. Gobuntu will not correctly enable much hardware today – but it exists as a banner for the cause of software freedom and as a reference of what IS possible with a totally rigorous approach. The goal is to make it a real point of pride to be able to run Gobuntu on a laptop or desktop or server, because it means that all of the stars have aligned to ensure that you have complete freedom to use that hardware with free software.
Well, count me in Mr.Shuttleworth! I’m joining the Free-Spftware-Laptop Mailing list and voting for this to happen! Gimana dengan teman-teman?
Cafe Con Leche – Ubuntu How To
Cafe Con Leche actually is a library project that intends to make the development of internet cafe programs easier, it consists of two library : libccls is used to make the server part, and libcclc is used to make the client. But The developers also made a GPL version Billing based on these library called CCLFox.
CCL is very popular here in Indonesia where Internet Cafes are starting to turn to Free Open Source Operating System since Microsoft and the Police starts sweeping internet cafes for illegal use of Microsoft Windows. But nonetheless it’s hard to find a How to on installing and using libCCL and CCLfox, especially on Ubuntu, I’ve done some googling last night and didn’t find anything satisfying. I’ve found some very good reference tough, like the one one linux.or.id and at Mr.Handri’s Blog.This How To is actually based on Linux Mint 3.0 but i think it’ll work just fine on Fiesty and you can download CCL here.
==Common Installation==
Both side of the application (client & server) has to meet their depdencies, since this is not a debian package, we have to install the dependencies manually. CCL depdencies are
- sqlite3
- glib2.0
- libfox1.4
- openssl
so on both computer (clien & server) run these command :
$ sudo apt-get install sqlite3 libsqlite3-dev
$ sudo apt-get install libfox1.4 libfox1.4-dev
$ sudo apt-get install libglib2.0-dev
$ sudo apt-get install libssl-dev
Don’t forget the build essentials for compiling from source :
$sudo apt-get install build-essential
Then edit your /etc/ld.so.conf file with :
$gksudo gedit /etc/ld.so.conf
and add these lines :
/usr/lib
/usr/local/lib
Then execute this :
$sudo ldconfig
== Billing Server ==
for the server side you’ll need these to files :
cclfox-0.7.0.tar.bz2
libccls-0.7.0.tar.bz2
Put these files on your home folder an do these steps :
$tar -xjvf libccls-0.7.0.tar.bz2
$cd libccls-0.7.0
$./configure
$make
$sudo make install
$cd ..
$tar -xjvf cclfox-0.7.0.tar.bz2
$cd cclfox-0.7.0
$./configure
$make
$sudo make install
Then create a launcher on your desktop and add :
cclfox -nossl
on the “command” text box
== Billing Client ==
for the server side you’ll need these to files :
cclcfox-0.7.0.tar.bz2
libcclc-0.7.0.tar.bz2
Put these files on your home folder an do these steps :
$tar -xjvf libcclc-0.7.0.tar.bz2
$cd libcclc-0.7.0
$./configure
$make
$sudo make install
$cd ..
$tar -xjvf cclcfox-0.7.0.tar.bz2
$cd cclcfox-0.7.0
$./configure
$make
$sudo make install
Then create a launcher on your desktop and add :
cclcfox -host <server’s ip> -name <client name> -nossl
on the “command” text box
That’s about it! Now my internet cafe is 100% sugar *M$* free!
Trouble Shooting :
this errors bellow usually happens because we have installed the depdencies but we didn’t installed the dev of the library that is used for compiling the CCL from source :
- configure: error: please install openssl
cure : $sudo apt-get install libssl-dev - configure: error: please install sqlite3
cure : $sudo apt-get install libsqlite3-dev - configure: error: please install glib
cure : $sudo apt-get install libglib2.0-dev - configure: error: please install fox
cure : $sudo apt-get install libfox1.4-dev - configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C++ compiler cannot create executables.
cure :$sudo apt-get install build-essential
If you find any error please let me know, and forgive my english, it’s getting rusty :p

Waskita.Net 3 Pake Linux Mint!
InsyaAllah tinggal plek! Langsung Beres!

Berikut Setting Waskita.Net 3 :
OS : Linux Mint 3.0 Cassandra
Additional Software :
- xmms
- Gyachoo
- trusss… apa lagi yah?
Motto Linux Mint : from freedom comes Elegance….
Ini menginspirasikan motto warnet saya :
an internet cafe with a sense of freedom..
Merdeka!

Red Phantom.. My Burnin’ Desire!
I’ve been looking for a male bike that could deliver power and comfort at an affordable price, but most of the motorcycle from the Japanese manufacturer are too expensive for my budget ( I’ve been daydreaming of a Yamaha Scorpio from the day it was launched) or too underpowered if they are affordable to buy ( Suzuki Thunder 125 ). Until one day me and wife went to a BAJAJ dealer on Jl. Dewi Sartika because of the curiosity I had for a this show room for only having one type of bike for sale
That particular bike is the BAJAJ Pulsar 180 DTS-i and this bike really surprise me for all the features and technology it has, and what realy makes me jumps is the price tag! Rp16.500.000,00 for this babe feels like a steal!
India as a Bike Producer?
I’ve been to India and stayed there for a while ( 5 years 1989-1994 ), at that time India’s auto seem like old school compared to Indonesia, but later i realized that was because their Government Policy to protect local auto producer, and now they really taste the fruit! Unlike Indonesia, India has developed into an industry giant with their own national brand! India can produce anything with their own technology from needles, sewing machines, microprocessors, motorcycles, cars, trucks, even they build their own tanks and other defense needs! If I’m not mistaken even Cisco developed their Software in India!
So.. from my opinion, India’s motorcycle is worth to try, and Bajaj has been exporting this motorcycle to many countries like Sri Lanka, Colombia, Bangladesh, Mexico, Central America, Peru and Egypt, And from my googling experience BAJAJ motorcycle have a greate review from owners from all over those countries. And don’t forget that Bajay that are widely used in Indonesia is from the same manufacturer! Those Tough BASTARDS still runs well on the streets of Jakarta trough these years (most of them are produced between 1970-1980)!
My BAJAJ Pulsar 180 DTS-i
After my visit to that show room i found my self thinking and daydreaming the Pulsar.. (oh my gosh I’m in love!) and after discussing for a while with my wife and my mother, we all agreed to pick up a RED Pulsar 180 DTS-i with a soft loan from my mum (thanx mum I love you very much) and last Friday my Red Hot Burnin Desire Arrived!
My first ride is like a dream never before in my life I’ve been stared at on the street :p and i have to get used to it! This bike looks darn cool! but on top of that, this bike is really powerful, comfortable and packed with loads of high tech goodies
.
Its a shame that the registration number would take 3 weeks.. sigh.. cant ride my new bike to far from home..
Indonesian Dream….
Being an Indonesian makes me envy the accomplishment that the Indian has reached, and hope deep fully that one day the Indonesian Government together with Indonesian Local Industries will make a big leap forward with making a national brand for automobile with technology accomplishment in mind. Me my self also have to give contribution.. So what will it be Yogha?

Ndiyo!

Sigh.. kenapa akhirannya ketus gini?……
Well Tetap Semangat dan Majulah Free OpenSource Indonesia!
Yuk Ah.. Salam!
Ubuntu Studio Theme.. Black! Sexy!
Actualy orange is my favorite color and for almost 2 years i’ve been using the default human theme on ubuntu and still loving it, but just earlier today i was told by Amri.Shodiq that ubuntu had another (Official maybe, because at the footer of the page it was writen “Conanical Ltd”) variant ubuntustudio and checked out the new screenshots right away! And i was blown away by the new sleek looks!
But this distribution is a DVD based ubuntu, considering all the goodies and application built in the distribution: it’s an Free Open Source Digital Studio Dream Come True! can’t wait till i finish downloading the DVD image, i tried these simple steps and installed the ubuntustudio theme and looks on my Fiesty
sudo su -c 'echo deb http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio feisty main >> /etc/apt/sources.list'
wget -q http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-look
Then select the new desktop background, the new theme and the new Login Splash (you now where to find this! :p )
That’s it! These are the Screenshots of my new ubuntustudio look desktop
Hemm… Black… Sleek… And Sexy! UbuntuStudio is gonna be my next distro for my desktop!
Warnet Linux Murah Ubuntu
- Gyach! Enhaced –> Yahoo messenger / meski gwe lebih prefer GAIM
- Lockdown Manager –> buat restriksi perubahan behaviour Gnome
WASKITAnet 2 : WARNET LINUX MURAH UBUNTU
(cuman PNS
)
Class Room LTSP with Edubuntu
LTSP with edubuntu 6.06 is as easy as 1,2,3!
Literally it is! with 3 easy steps I’ve got some of the computer of at my Lab up and booting the edubuntu 6.06 server. Some….? Well.. actually there was some problem booting the older Pentium 2 computers. I’ve got an error that says that the client can’t find the PXE Server. I’ll discuss those later at the troubleshooting section of this story of my edubuntu way to ltsp glory…
Here we go, I start my first step with configuring the /etc/ltsp/dhcp.conf to suite my current network
$sudo gedit /etc/ltsp/dhcp.conf
Assuming that the server’s ip address is 197.168.7.1
authoritative;
subnet 192.168.7.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 192.168.7.220 192.168.7.250;
option domain-name “lab.stsn.ac.id”;
option domain-name-servers 192.168.7.1;
option broadcast-address 192.168.7.255;
option routers 192.168.7.1;option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
filename “/ltsp/pxelinux.0″;
option root-path “/opt/ltsp/i386″;
}
Second step, start my dhcp server
$sudo /etc/init.d/dhcp start
And then the Third one is the last step :
Set your clients to boot from the network, this can be done in two ways : change the BIOS settings to make the client boot from the net, almost every new computers that have an on-board network interface support this feature. Or for a computer or network interface that doesn’t support network boot, you can build a startup disk to boot ltsp client’s, here is a great site for creating a boot image http://rom-o-matic.net
That’s it !?!
Well… I wish it was my last step that night, but faith took me the other way, the new AMD Sempron 3000+ computers boot right away without any problem but my lab only had 4 of those and the others are old compaq intel pentium2 PC’s that are unused coz the just can’t take life as a today computer
. And in my case the trouble is to boot the PXE server with them even tough they can automatically detect the dhcp server.
I’ve found a great thread at the ubuntu community forum that discuss this matter and found out that the old version of intel LANdesk Service Agent II firmware 0.99 caused this problem. And heres another good link : http://syslinux.zytor.com/hardware.php#network.
These are the steps that i went through :
- Step 1: Edit /etc/inetd.conf. Since I already installed and configured the Ubuntu ltsp server packages, then I have a line for tftp there. Add “-r blksize” to the end of this line, save and exit. NB Do not waste your time with /etc/default/tftpd-hpa – this has no effect on the running of the service as it is started by inetd.
- Step 2:Edit /etc/sysctl.conf. Add the line “net/ipv4/ip_no_pmtu_disc=1″save, exit and reboot.
Then those pentium II zombies came to life!!!!
Credits to steps above goes all to v4169sgr, the guy who had a hard time finding this solution
After all clients are up and running i had another problem! I can’t login with the username and password that i made from the administration panel!!!
Later i found out that the ltsp system was located at /opt/ltsp/*architecture*/ then I do these steps :
$ sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/*architecture*/
$ sudo adduser *username*
note that you have to have make the same username both from the administrator control panel and from the steps above.
From then my Lab runs edubuntu LTSP without any trouble at all!
My second attempt to install edubuntu 6.06 is at a cyber cafe, and all that I’ve done is just those three easy steps i’ve mentioned earlier! nothing more! I didn’t encounter any of the trouble I’ve found earlier at my Lab! I’ve set up the cyber cafe into a edubuntu ltsp network in under half an hour! All of the clients were IBM Netvista’s with intel P3-800Mhz 128 Mb SDRAM that is slow like hell when it runs on Windows , but now they run as fast as the server!
In my opinion Edubuntu’s LTSP can be the solution for schools or labs or library’s that are searching for a cheap but powerful solution to aid their need for IT education, besides the easiness of the LTSP I havent found any linux distribution with an education application suite that are as good as Edubuntu’s.
Salam.
