Ubuntu Edgy On Intel 945GM Graphics & Wide Screen LCD NoteBooks
Ass. Wr. Wb.
Edgy eft has been released for quite some time and thanks for the guys from the gathering i got my self a edubuntu 6.10
at first i was realy hyped and with great expectation I installed it right away on my Orange, but the this buggy release realy starts to annoy me with freezing Xwindows and crashing applets on Gnome, at the point where i was going to return to the good old Dapper i remember a phrase that my best friend used to say : “No body likes a quiter!”. So I decided to stick with Edgy and try to solve problems one at a time! Coz this is what open source is all about.. solving problem’s and sharing it with others
And to the first problem that i solve is the freezin X
and with this problem gone my life with edgy became stable, fast & beautifull (Thanx to beryl
)
The other reason why i wrote this how to is because there’s no explaination on the unofficial ubuntu guide on installing a i945GM graphic controller, but there is nothing new in this howto, coz on that guide there’s a good howto on installing a 1915, and this guide is actualy based on that howto
First download the i945GM driver from :
http://downloadmirror.intel.com/df-support/9726/eng/dri-Intel-3.4.3006-20051209.i386.rpm
This driver was originaly made for SUSE 10 that is why it is in binary RPM form, but that’s okay with a little bit of magic called alien the RPM turns into a Debian Package!
Go to the folder where u put the rpm file then do the alien
:
#sudo alien dri-Intel-3.4.3006-20051209.i386.rpm
Last thing to do :
#sudo dpkg -i dri-Intel-3.4.3006-20051209.i386.deb
Reboot and Thats it!!! On my Orange this installation works like a charm..
right after the reboot my screen resolution has been auto adjusted to 1280 x 800 and the wide screen now look crystal clear with no smudge like distortion like it used to have without the intel driver and 1024 x 768 resolution.
And with this driver installed installing beryl became posible, but i’ll discuss that later.. Enjoy!
Wassalam
